A breath-taking and romantic scenery. Lots of flowers and
food. Gimmicks to enjoy. And bargains everywhere. These are some of the things
visitors await in one of the most visited tourist parks in Baguio City – and this
is the infamous Mines View Park.
Located within the city limits of Baguio City, Benguet, the
Mines View Park is usually the next stop taken by most tourists after visiting
the Mansion or Wright Park. Right at the entrance to the park, guests will be
overwhelmed with the countless stalls and stores selling various native handicrafts
like sweaters, blankets, brooms, locally made silver products and jewelry, wood
carvings and many others. For the hungry and those who are up to a food trip,
there are also several native local food items sold like strawberries and their
processed forms, peanut brittles, chocolate flakes, longa biscuits, and much
more. For many products, they come in really affordable prices. Other fun attractions
like riding a painted horse (bravo “Nicki Minaj”!) can also be enjoyed.
But visitors are not really after these massive bargains; they
are curious of the panoramic view of the abandoned gold and copper mines by early
Ibaloi and Igorot people, and the surrounding mountains, which can be seen from
the viewing deck. However, before you can reach the observation area, you would have to go down a winding stone-covered
stairway (just be careful, there are no railings! LOL).
Well, it was late afternoon when I and some friends visited
the place, and nah, we were not able to see the mines. Yet, a magnificent sight
still awaited us. With the settling dusk, the fogs and the sleepy mountains
created such awe-inspiring colors. With the city lighting from below, there
were sparkles from around. And with the cold wind, it was a great way to end
our day!
The Mines View Park is easily accessible by a taxi. There are
also accommodations near the park, so visitors need not to fear where to stay
if they opt to stop for the night.
