General Santos City, also known as GenSan, "Boom Town", "The City by the Bay", and "Tuna Capital of the Philippines", is the southernmost port city in the Philippines. It is located at 6°7'N 125°10'E latitude and is southeast of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. It is the center of commerce, trade, and logistics in Region XII.
The city's economy is mainly anchored on two sectors: agro- industry and fishing industry. Being typhoon-free and having been blessed with fertile tillable soil, General Santos City produced export quality corn, coconut, banana, pineapple, asparagus, and rice. Hogs, poultry and cattle are also successful agro-industries in the city. Being able to produce the best sashimi-grade tuna in the Philippines, General Santos City is home to seven tuna processing plants and a huge world class Fish Port Complex. Hence, it is named "The Tuna Capital of the Philippines".
The city is rich in history and culture. Every year, it celebrates two grand festivities. First is the Kalilangan Festival which is held every February. ""Kalilangan" means festival, festivity or jubilation. By October, the Generals (term referring to the citizens of General Santos City) celebrates the abundance of the seas in the Tuna Festival.
Over the years, several notable personalities sprung from the City. In the field of sports, who would forget the former Super Featherweight WBC Champion in the 80s Rolando Navarete, and more recently, "The Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire, and the greatest pound-for-pound boxer and first and only professional boxer to win world titles in eight different weight divisions Manny Pacquiao.
In the field of beauties, there is Shamcey Supsup, 2011 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and 2011 Miss Universe 3rd Runner-Up. And in the field of entertainment, the city has "Budoy" and matinee idol Gerald Anderson, and the funny Melisa "Melai" Cantiveros.
Truly, General Santos City, with its fertile land and culture, is a place of peaceful development and harmony.
