May
is coming to an end and enrolments in both primary and secondary levels are
almost done. But for the tertiary or college level, most enrolments have just
started and already picking up speed for many schools. Eager students are flocking
in their universities, standing in queues, bonding with friends over talks of
crushes and courses, and for many, running after professors for completing
requirements and getting grades. But these are only petty worries during enrolment,
the greater problem is the total sum of different fees – from the College fee
to the miscellaneous fees and tuition. And for many tertiary schools in Region
12, they are raising their tuition fees.
Just
today, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Region12 has endorsed for
approval by its central office the application of 16 private universities and
colleges to increase their tuition and other fees this academic year. Last week,
it was reported that CHED central office received application for tuition fee
hike from 451 institutions; of these, 344 were approved and the other 107 were
denied.
Among
the schools who applied for tuition fee increases are:
- Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (GSC)
- Holy Trinity College (GSC)
- AMA Computer Learning Center (GSC)
- AMA Computer College (GSC)
- Notre Dame Siena College (Polomolok)
- Notre Dame of Marbel University (Koronadal City)
- Notre Dame of Tacurong College (Tacurong City)
- Notre Dame of Salaman College (Lebak, Sultan Kudarat
- I Link College of Science and Technology (Cotabato City)
- AMA Computer College (Cotabato City)
- Dr. P. Ocampo Colleges (Cotabato City)
- Southern Philippines Methodist College (Kidapawan City)
- Central Mindanao Colleges (Kidapawan City)
- Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (Kidapawan City)
- Southern Christian College (Midasayap, North Cotabato)
- Notre Dame of Midsayap College ( Midasayap, North Cotabato)
The said schools are requesting for
5-10% increase in tuition. Parts of the requirements for the application for
tuition fee increase are consultations with students, parents and other
concerned groups. CHED requires that 70 percent of the applied increase in
tuition and other school fees should be allocated to the upgrading of teachers’
and school personnel’s benefits, salaries and allowances while the remaining 30
percent should go to improvements in school facilities and equipment.
Region 12 has a total of 92
colleges and universities, 87 of which are owned and operated by private
groups, companies and individuals.
