The 16th Kalilangan Festival and the 73rd Foundation Anniversary celebration of General Santos City have officially opened last Tuesday, February 21, 2012. The city skies were covered with dazzling colors as a grand firework display graced the opening program during the night.
This year’s theme is “Convergence in Divergence: Enriching Heritage, Bridging Culture”, denoting that the celebration will give more fun and entertainment out of the culture and heritage the city offers. Activities will mainly focus on the diversity of General Santos City as represented by the Christians, Muslims and Indigenous People (IPs). The opening ceremony has highlighted this as presentations showcased the rich culture of the Generals.
A soft opening has been held last February 10 at the Oval grounds with plaza bazaar, good galore and carnival rides serving as the opening delights. For the complete schedule of Kalilangan 2012, refer to the table below.

Some of the highlights of this year’s festivity are:
Kalilangan sa Barangay. Kalilangan has been brought to every barangay so that all Generals can take part in the festivity. Amusement parks and bazaars are some of the featuress in the activity.
Kadsagayan or Street Dancing. A mardi gras of colorful customs and smiling faces of the Generals, showing off their dancing prowess and happy disposition.
Laro ng Lahi. Generals enjoying traditional games like Tabanug (kite-flying), Tug of War, Skipping Rope, Sack Race, Kadang Marathon, Sungka, Patintero, Palosebo, and the board game Dama.
Cosplay. The costume play is a new hit to today’s generation, but unlike the usual techno-savvy themes, Generals will feature Pinoy (Filipino) heroes.
Other exciting events are the agri-fair displays, cookfest, animal shows, gadgets demo, fun run, visual arts exhibits, and parties.
The word “Kalilangan” is derived from the Maguindanaoan word kalilang, meaning festival or celebration. As it is, may this year’s celebration not only live up to its definition but also to the true core of the life and culture in General Santos City.
