Once again, Mindanaoans will have another reason to celebrate as some of their bright minds bagged a prestigious award at I-SWEEP 2012.
Alabel National Science High School students Jewelle Mae P. Solijon, Sergia Virginia A. Gepitulan and Angelica Francesca O. Tumbocon brought home the silver medal from the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project (I-SWEEP) Olympiad. There were five research studies from the Philippines presented at the competition but their paper entitled “Wild Yam (Dioscorea hispida Dennst.) Starch: An Effective Additive in the Production of Biodegradable Plastic” captured the attention of the judges. Overall, 500 students from 68 countries and 44 states participated in the said event.
Aside from the silver medal and certificate, the students also received monetary awards.
The AlSci Research Team is coached by Research Teacher Shiela P. Butil.
The awarding ceremony was held at George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas last May 6, 2012.
