Mindanao State University – General Santos City graduates had recently taken the headlines these past few days for two good reasons. First, Senator Antonio Trillanes was the honorable guest speaker during the University’s commencement exercises. Secondly, some of the graduates are exemplary and inspiring, enough that both the local and national TV news recognized them.
First of them is Colt Ian del Castillo. On the afternoon of March 30, the same day as the University’s Baccalaureate Services and Awarding Ceremonies, TV Patrol SocSKSarGen presented him in their news feature “Kakanin Vendor’s Son Graduates Cum Laude”. Mr. del Castillo, who took up Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, is a son of a bokayo (a native coconut candy) vendor and an illegitimate child of a prominent politician in South Cotabato. According to him, his education had been a constant struggle, even up to a point that he almost gave up, save for his uncle who encouraged him to pursue his dreams. During his college days, Mr. del Castillo was a student leader and became active in the Human Rights Students Association. He was also hailed as Mr. MSU 2010.
Mr. del Castillo plans to pursue law. This way, he will be able to defend the rights of those like him – an illegitimate child who was deprived of rights of belongingness and a complete family.
The other names which took the spotlight in the TV news are the smart and beautiful twins of the College of Business Administration and Accountancy. Flourence Kathrine S. Enriquez graduated on top of the class, being the only magna cum laude awardee. Her twin, Flourence Marie S. Enriuqez, just closely lags behind her as cum laude. Both took up the 5-year course Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. Despite being orphaned from both parents, the twins have excelled in many of their undertakings. Since childhood, both were honor students of their class.
Undoubtedly, MSU-GSC has become a breeding ground of brilliant and inspiring graduates. In the latest Milestone Report (2007 – 2012) published by the University, it is clear that there is an increasing number of graduates that every college produced for the past five years. More amazingly, the performance of its graduates in the different licensure examination is exceptional, both the percentage passing rate and number of topnotchers.
Congratulations to the graduates of MSU-GSC 2012! May you all continue to inspire others and be valuable resources for the country, especially to our beloved General Santos City.
