Hinugyaw Festival 2012

Koronadal City is currently celebrating its Hinugyaw Festival. Hinugyaw Festival, dubbed as the "Festival of Festivals," is a celebration of the different cultures that has dwelled on the fertile valley of Koronadal for many years now.

"Hinugayaw," from a Haligaynon term, meaning "merrymaking," is a jovial and colorful festival which tells of the historical stream of how tribes from different parts of the Philippines has rolled up in what Koronadal is now despite their diversity in culture.

With the theme, “Building People, Building Character, Building Progress”, the Hinugyaw Festival runs from January 6-10, 2012. Various events have been prepared which would highlight the rich culture and origins of the city as a plain of cogon grass or “kolon-datal”.

The festival opened last January 6 with a homage to the first settlers who came to Koronadal City before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The activities for the five-day festivities took off with a wreath laying at the martyrs’ shrine inside Koronadal Central Elementary School 1. The site was the burial place of seventeen martyrs which were residents massacred by Japanese soldiers for allegedly hiding Filipino guerillas.

On the opening day, a theatrical play called Handurawan was presented by the Hinugyaw Dance Troupe inside South Cotabato Gymnasium and Cultural Center. Handurawan recounted the arrival of the first Christian settlers, their struggles against the Japanese invaders, and their heroism.

Other important activities lined-up for the five-day celebration include: sports competitions (motocross, practical shooting, mountain biking, and golf), fun-run, Search for Lakambini ng Koronadal, farmers’ festival, trade show, tree growing, foam party and disco sa kalye, and drumline competition.

Tomorrow, January 10, 2012, Koronadal City will turn 72. It was created by virtue of Municipal Council Resolution No. 32 series of 1948.

Activities will begin with a civic military parade around the city by 6:00 A.M., followed by the Drumline Competition and then the Anniversary Program. At 5:00 in the afternoon, Hinugyaw: Piyesta Korona will take place at the Main Street and Front of Ace Centerpoint, followed by a Foam Party and Disco sa Kalye. The Hinugyaw Festival will end with a colorful and spectacular Fireworks Display by 10:00 P.M.
